Cardea retained top spot in the PSMFL Division 3 with a straightforward win over a Parkside Reserves, a team they had lost to just two weeks previous.

The rain that had threatened the game held off and the game was played in excellent football conditions at Bushfield. After their performances last week Tom and George Greetham were picked to lead the front line, however George had to withdraw after the warm up due to injuries sustained in a snowboarding incident, Tom Broughton took his place.

Despite a poor loss of possession at kick off Cardea were soon on the attack. Tom Greetham was passed the ball and from a very wide position tested the goalkeeper who spilled his shot and Daniel Robinson had the chance of a tap in from 3 yards, however he blasted the ball high over the bar.

It was constant dominance in the first half for Cardea and Tom Greetham had another shooting opportunity five minutes in when a clearance from a Cardea corner fell to him 20 yards out but his shot went wide.

Captain Daryl Patrick was then involved in a couple of chances within five minutes of each other. The first, with 20 minutes gone, saw him play the ball through to Kynan Bereznyckyj whose was in on the keeper but the keeper came out well and smothered the ball. The second chance came from a Patrick cross which floated into the area and was volleyed by Michael Williams but was deflected just wide.

The deadlock was broken on 31 minutes when Bereznyckyj controlled a pass from Robinson on the edge of the Parkside area and moved the ball into the box for Patrick who went through the challenges of two defenders and finished well into the far corner of the goal.

Straight from the kick off Cardea were almost caught out when the Parkside striker strolled past the Cardea players with ease to get into the area, where he was greeted by the out rushing goalkeeper Adam Simons which forced the striker wide and the ball was eventually put out for a corner.

Cardea were soon on the attack again with Robinson running onto a through ball on the left, he struck a good, hard shot but the keeper produced a near post save to keep it out. From the resulting corner Cardea doubled their lead thanks to two Tom's combining. Broughton's corner kick was headed in by Rimes.

As half time approached Parkside had a free kick 30 yards out on the right side. The kick was whipped in and Simons used his knees to good effect to keep it out and the rebound was hit over. Cardea had the ball in the back of the net again on the stroke of half time, however it was disallowed as it had been comically slapped in by the hands of Rimes.

Into the second half and it was another fast start for Cardea as Broughton raced through on the right and chipped the ball over the on coming keeper which went wide of the goal and was kept in. The ball ended up back at left back Ryan Moore's feet who produced a superb cross field ball to Bereznyckyj on the right and his square pass was guided into the back of the net by Patrick with a controlled, curling finish for 3-0.

On the hour mark Ryan Moore had the ball at his feet on the half way line and surged into the Parkside half past a few defenders and took a shot from the edge of the box which went well wide.

Parkside did produce an opportunity to score moments later when they broke into the box and the shot hit the post and rebounded straight to another Parkside player who slammed the ball against the other post.

Coming up to 70 minutes and Cardea were on the attack again, the ball was tossed into the area and Aaron Yeoman's attempted overhead kick ended with him on his backside getting nowhere near the ball. The loose ball fell to substitute Chris Arnold who shot wide.

Cardea made it four when a long kick from Simons was headed on by Yeoman and Tom Broughton spotted the keeper off his line and lobbed the ball into the net from 25 yards out. The four goal lead didn't last long as Parkside pulled one back through Lee English's 25 yard free kick which went into the top corner of the goal.

The most entertaining part of the match came in the last 10 minutes when, for the second time in two weeks, Daryl Patrick lost his footing controlling a ball on the touch line and ended up flat on his back at the feet of the away spectators much to the amusement of everyone watching.

Cardea had a couple of chances to add a fifth thanks to shots from Bereznyckyj and Greetham but their shots ended up saved and wide respectively. The final whistle went and the 4-1 result did not flatter Cardea who could have easily added more.

After the game manager Kev Webster said: "It was nice to get revenge and see that the "big tackles" comment was all mouth. It was a good team performance but we need to remember to keep playing as a team. At 4-1 there was too much individual play going on when we should be putting these teams out of sight, as the league could be won on goal difference.

"I was not happy with the arguing and shouting at each other which was being displayed towards the end, we are a team and our team spirit and banter is better than most teams so let's not cause friction between each other because those that are causing the friction will be removed from the squad as I will not tolerate it.

"I won't dwell on the negatives, it was a good result and a well deserved three points. It's a tough game next week so let's stay focused boys."

Man of the match went to free scoring Daryl Patrick whose two goals saw him climb joint top of the highest scoring chart with Tom Broughton. Next up for Cardea is Fletton Sports with the match taking place at Bretton Woods on Sunday 27th October.
