Early goals from Mike Dandrilli and George Greetham earned the win for Cardea that kept them 4 points clear at the top of the league.

The sun was shining at Werrington Sports Centre for the division 3 clash between Cardea and Werrington Dragons. Despite the sun shine there was still a strong wind.

Cardea started with Michael Williams and Dale Moore as centre backs after Tony Harper was ruled out on medical grounds. Adam Simons and George Greetham started up front for the tigers, who wore their new orange kit for the first time.

Cardea started fast and it wasn't long before they went in front. Following a Dragons clearance Tom Rimes headed the ball back into the box and it fell to Dandrilli. The man with the new nose controlled it and slotted it past Dragons keeper Dave Hardingham to give the league leaders the breakthrough.

The lead was nearly doubled two minutes later, a cross from Aaron Yeoman was met on the edge of the area by an overhead kick from Adam Simons. The acrobatic effort when just wide of the post, had it gone in it would have undoubtedly been goal of the season.

After 10 minutes Cardea created another chance, left back Ryan Moore picked up the ball on halfway and ran all the way to the byline and cut inside but his shot was beaten away at the near post by the Dragon's keeper.

From the corner the ball was only half cleared and Kynan Bereznyckyj lashed a volley back towards the goal but his effort went just wide.

Cardea did finally add a second after 16 minutes. A long throw into the box from Dandrilli was headed in by Greetham. There was a bit of controversy with the goal as it looked like Simons had impeded Hardingham, in the Dragons goal, in an offside position. However the goal stood.

After scoring the second the tempo of the match seemed to slow almost to walking pace and the Cardea players ran out of ideas when it came to attacking.

There was one bright spot for Cardea team morale when Mike Dandrilli was taken out by the Dragons keeper Dave Hardingham, much to the delight of everyone watching. Unfortunately he got up and was able to continue however he was regretting his use of the phrase "Unleash the Dave"!!

No changes were made at half time and the players who started the game had another 15 minutes to prove they could still create chances. The second half started the same as the last 20 minutes of the first half, with the away team struggling to play into the strong wind.

Defender Michael Williams probably had the most touches in the second half as he tried to play out from the back but found his options were limited.

Cardea did create half chances with both Dandrilli and Greetham both failing to add to their first half goals as they shot wide of the goal.

Werrington Dragons did have one chance towards the end as a free kick swung into the box caused confusion in the Cardea defence and goalkeeper Anton Fountain had to be alert to thwart the attempt on goal.

The most entertaining thing to happen during the second half was Craig Robinson kicking a drinks bottle to George Greetham and hit him right in the groin!!

The referee brought the game to an end and, despite the poor 70 minutes, the three points were all Cardea had wanted.

After the game manager Craig Robinson said: "We were never in danger of losing the game. We turned it on for 15 minutes, scored the goals and won the game.

"Would have been nice for the lads to actually want to work for the full 90 and not just relax because the game was done! Against a better team we can't afford to just turn up for 15 mins a week! But nevertheless 3 points and 3 wins from the title."

Kev Webster added: "Thought we controlled the game well, never looked like conceding or being under threat. We lack the killer instinct we showed against athletic but 3 points and a clean sheet was vital for our hunt of the title."

Cardea now have a well deserved two week break until their next league game when they will take on Black Bull at Bushfield.
