Tom Broughton and Aaron Yeoman scored twice as Cardea FC found their goalscoring form while Peterborough Athletic had a second half to forget.

Lawson Avenue hosted Cardea's 9th home game of the season on the hottest day of the year so far. The starting line up saw one change from last week's Guyhirn victory with Yeoman coming in for Daryl Patrick, who was a bit worse for wear after a heavy night!

Cardea started the match and were kicking into the sun. The Tigers were keeping the ball well and the back four looked to have the Athletic attack under control.

The home team created the first chance of the match when Yeoman lofted a ball over the Athletic back four and Broughton latched onto it only for the goalkeeper to come out well and smother his shot.

The ball was in the Athletic net a minute later when Tom Greetham found himself in a similar position to his strike partner but the goalkeeper produced another good save to deny him, Greetham swung a left arm towards the ball as it rebounded back to him and found the back of the net but the referee was close by to disallow the goal.

With 10 minutes to go until half time the Athletic goalkeeper almost made a huge error as he fumbled a routine pick up and Kynan Bereznyckyj was alert to put the keeper under pressure and managed to force him into conceding a corner.

From that corner Cardea took the lead. Adam Simons whipped in a great ball, George Greetham attempted to get the flick on before the ball bounced through to Yeoman who forced the ball over the line, with the help of a touch from the defender.

Cardea should have doubled their lead 3 minutes later. A good, attacking run down the wing from left back Dale Moore resulted in a good pass to George Greetham who drilled the ball into the box for Broughton but his shot from 8 yards was straight at the keeper.

The referee called time on the half and Cardea changed to a 4-4-2 for the second half with Daryl Patrick and Daniel Robinson coming on.

Cardea started the second half on top and doubled their lead just five minutes in. A defence splitting ball from Simons was converted by Broughton who chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper from just inside the box.

Peterborough Athletic were still providing a threat in sporadic attacks but these were usually well dealt with by the Cardea back line. Michael Williams produced a good last ditch tackle to deny a one on one and goalkeeper Anton Fountain cleared the ball.

Yeoman earned a free kick for the home team on 57 minutes and he took the kick himself. With the goalkeeper struggling with the strong sun Yeoman struck the ball on target and as the keeper back tracked towards his line the ball slipped through his hands and into the net.

Peterborough Athletic were awarded a free kick in a similar position just passed the hour mark and Athletic winger Andy Miller's shot was punched over the bar by Fountain.

Twenty minutes into the second half and Cardea had four. Following the breakdown of a Cardea attack Dale Moore lofted a ball back into the area and, under pressure from Simons, the defender headed the ball straight past his own keeper and into the net.

Five minutes later and the Athletic resistance was broken again. A huge kick down field from Fountain eluded the Athletic defence and Simons kept himself onside and was one on one with the keeper. He took one touch to control the ball and with his second touch lobbed the ball over the keeper. His celebration was to slide onto the floor but the only people around were Tom Broughton's parents who refused to join in with the celebration!!

Cardea scored their 6th five minutes later and it was arguably the best goal of the day. Simons played another good pass across the pitch to Broughton who struck the ball first time and it flew past the keeper and into the net. It was Broughton's second of the game and tenth of the season.

Peterborough Athletic grabbed a late consolation much to the annoyance of keeper Fountain. The ball was crossed from the right as the Cardea defence was outnumbered and it made it all the way to the back post where the ball was rifled home.

It was virtually the last kick of the game as the referee brought the one sided contest to an end. The win means Cardea are now 4 points clear at the top of the league, although Fenland Police have two games in hand.

After the game manager Kev Webster said: "Apologies for the poor first half tactics what I had in mind didn't work, had a shocker!! Second half, once we had a settled formation, I thought we quickly dominated the game which showed by scoring two quick goals.

"After that the score line could have been anything! I thought the whole team looked much better, we created a lot of chances and battled well. Apart from the loss of concentration towards the end rarely looked under threat and that's credit to the vocals of Anton a solid back line.

"Tough call for man of the match, the returning Yeoman played to his usual standards, Simons was enjoying his various second half attacking positions which he's done all season. For me it was Tom B who got man of the match, he always works hard and took his two goals well.

"Was a quality team performance and second half was a joy to watch. Because of my mare of a first half I'm subbing myself to assistant manager for next weeks game, good luck Robbo!"

Cardea travel to Werrington to play The Dragons next Sunday in another must win game.
