Brendon Chapman made a goalscoring return to Cardea FC as the home side came from a goal down to defeat Fletton Sports 2-1.

Bretton was the location for a home Cardea match for the first time this season due to usual pitch Bushfield already being used. The weather had a massive affect on the game as strong winds descended on Peterborough.

Cardea welcomed Chapman back for the first time this season and he started the match on the bench. Due to no recognised right back being available winger Daniel Robinson had to drop back into the role with Kynan Bereznyckyj in front of him on the right of midfield.

Fletton Sports kicked the game off with Cardea playing into the wind in the first half. With two minutes on the clock Mike Dandrilli surged down the left and his cross into the box found Thomas Broughton who miss kicked at the vital moment but the loose ball was pounced on by Tom Greetham who shot just wide.

Fifteen minutes in and Cardea were creating many of the early chances and they had a opportunity through a free kick 20 yards from goal after Daryl Patrick was fouled. Aaron Yeoman stepped up to take the kick and it was saved at the second attempt by the Fletton keeper.

A major point of controversy in the game came with twenty minutes gone when a long ball forward was held up in the wind and Broughton had beaten the offside trap and was clean through and in on goal but was cynically brought down 20 yards out. The referee gave the free kick but failed to produce the red card the challenge deserved much to the annoyance of the Cardea team. The resulting free kick was fired into the wall by Dandrilli.

Half an hour gone and Cardea had more chances to open the scoring as the ball was cross in from the right and Dandrilli, Greetham and Broughton all had half chances as the ball pin-balled around the area. Moments after and Yeoman had a great chance after he ran onto a good chipped ball by Patrick into the area but his right foot volley went wide when he had the time to do better.

Fletton started to get a foothold in the game towards the end of the first half and the Cardea defence were causing problems for themselves by not clearing their lines when the option was available. One occasion saw the Fletton striker steal the ball on the left and cut inside and shoot but Cardea keeper Anton Fountain produced a good save to keep it out.

The deadlock was broken on 36 minutes when a slip from Patrick in midfield saw a Cardea attack break down and Fletton striker Michael Hobbs broke through the Cardea defence and beat the keeper with a shot into the corner of the goal. Cardea were almost two down immediately after when Fountain had to produce another save to tip over a long range effort.

As half time approached more sloppy defending gifted possession to Fletton in the Cardea box and the Fletton striker was again denied another goal by a flying save from Fountain, who was having a superb game.

The half time whistle was blown and Fletton held a narrow lead at half time. The substitution made at half time saw Brendon Chapman come on for Tom Greetham. The second half would see Cardea kicking with the strong wind.

Just minutes into the second half and Cardea had not learned their lessons from the first half when Michael Williams under hit a back pass back to Fountain but the keeper did well to deny the forward with a smothering save. Williams made up for his mistake later, however, when he stopped a Fletton attack by outpacing the striker and flicking the ball back over his head and dribbling the ball out of defence.

Cardea were finding it hard to adjust to playing with the wind and a lot of long balls got caught in the wind and carried out of play, one occasion was a big kick from Fountain which only bounced once before narrowly going over the opposition's cross bar.

Dale Moore replaced Daniel Robinson after 60 minutes to play right back as he continued his comeback from a rib injury caused by not being able to lift weights properly.

Moments later on 62 minutes Dandrilli was causing more problems down the left and was fouled on the edge of the area about 5 yards in from the byeline. Chapman stepped up to take the kick and his curling effort flew directly in the top corner and provided the equaliser for Cardea.

Cardea nearly took the lead just after their goal as a probing ball into the area was ran onto by Broughton who only had the keeper to beat but the ball bobbled and the striker blasted the ball over the bar.

Fletton tried to recover from the setback as they forced a free kick on the edge of the area with 15 minutes to go but the effort was saved by Fountain. Cardea were quickly back on the attack and scored what turned out to be the winning goal when Bereznyckyj played a good ball through for Chapman who's shot beat the keeper and crept into the far corner of the goal to cap a great comeback for the striker.

The final 10 minutes was full of good Cardea defending and counter attacking with Dandrilli having two possible chances but the goalkeeper was alert on both occasions and beat him to the ball. In the last minute of normal time after a succession of corners the ball was eventually played into the box but was headed over by defender Tony Harper.

As the match moved into the final minute of three added on Tom Greetham, who had been subbed back on for Broughton, had a chance to confirm the victory but his long range shot was saved by the keeper.

The referee brought the match to an end and Cardea picked up a deserved victory thanks in part to the goalscoring performance of Chapman and the goal stopping efforts of Fountain, who earned the man of the match award for his saves throughout the match.

After the game manager Kev Webster said: "I thought we controlled the game well in blustery conditions, we were unlucky in the first half not to take the chances we created. But we have to cut out some of the sloppiness that keeps creeping back into certain games.

"1-0 at half time flattered them but we could have been punished further for some silly mistakes. It was a solid second half and a return to the team for Brendon with a bang with two goals was pleasing. Well done lads, that was a big result."

Cardea now have a two week break from the league as they have a week off for the fixtures to be played on the 3rd November and the game on the 10th November will be a Northants Cup game against Moulten Spartak Reserves at Bushfield.
