Tom Broughton and Tom Rimes grabbed the goals as Cardea beat Black Bull 2-1 in terrible conditions at Bushfield.

Constant, heavy rain and a muddy pitch do not make for good football conditions as Cardea and Black Bull found out in one of Sunday morning's few surviving games.

Karl Broughton made his first league appearance in goal and his brother Tom was paired up front with Tom Rimes.

The pitch was already very cut up before the game kicked off and as soon as the game started the centre circle was muddier than a pig pen.

Cardea made a good start and after a few early half chances Aaron Yeoman slipped a ball through the middle to Broughton who beat the goalkeeper to the ball and slotted past him into the net.

Most players were struggling to stay on their feet as the rain kept coming down, however one fall was funnier than most. Captain Daryl Patrick, who has a history of comically falling over, attempted a slide tackle but as he went in his knee gave way and he fell over his own feet, slid onto his stomach and missed the ball completely. Even the ref was laughing!!

Patrick nearly had the last laugh though as moments later he found himself in space inside the area but his shot was just tipped over the bar by the Black Bull keeper.

As half time approached Cardea won a corner. Adam Simons went across to take it and his ball was perfect for Rimes who headed the ball in unchallenged to make it 2-0 to Cardea.

It was Rimes last action of the match as he had to come off at half time after the heavy pitch had taken it's toll on him. Mike Dandrilli took his place with Brendon Chapman also coming on for Billy Thomson.

The second half began and Cardea went straight on the attack looking for a third goal. After a good move the ball was played to Simons who took it into the area but was denied by a good save and had to settle for a corner.

As the second half continued to match descended into chaos, players were falling over and leaving the ball behind due to the atrocious conditions. The centre circle was almost unplayable and a couple of players couldn't cope with the conditions any longer and had to be subbed and head back to the changing rooms.

Cardea almost added a third in the 80th minute when a back pass got stuck in the mud and Thomson was first to the ball but his shot was saved by the keepers foot.

Black Bull scored a consolation late on after a slip by the Cardea defence was pounced upon by the Black Bull striker and he lobbed his shot into the net. This led to most of the Black Bull players (and some Cardea players) to Klinsmann dive into the centre circle in celebration!!

The referee brought an end to the match much to the relief of players, management and spectators who all ran back to the changing rooms. As the Cardea players piled into the hot showers it suddenly emerged that only one player had brought a towel which was fought over by the drenched players!!

Afterwards manager Kev Webster said: "We played the conditions well and scored two good goals in the first half when conditions were at their best.

"We were unlucky not to score more in the second half and only conceded thanks to the pitch getting the better of Willy near the end!!"

In a change to the fixtures Cardea's next game will be a top of the table clash against Fenland Police on Sunday 2nd February.
