Cardea FC comfortably beat Moorhen 4-1 at Bushfield as Tom Broughton and John Reddell grabbed their first goals of the season.

Cardea FC (3-5-2): Gav Sampson; Anthony Kiernan, Stuart Yaxley (c), Michael Williams, Dale Moore, Kynan Bereznyckyj; Shane Cooke, Adam Simons, Aaron Yeoman; Rob Ames, Luke Penman. Subs: John Reddell, Tom Broughton, Gav Earl, Ryan Moore.

The first half an hour saw Cardea produce the best chances. Penman had a couple of shots saved and Ames also sent a shot just wide from a cut back.

Ames was injured after a collision with the goalkeeper and had to be replaced by Tom Broughton, making his first appearance of the season following an injury.

The substitute was heavily involved in Cardea's opener after 35 minutes. Yeoman played a fantastic ball through the Moorhen defence and Broughton was in on goal his shot rocketed back off the bar and was blasted in from 18 yards on the half volley by Cooke.

The lead was almost doubled a couple of minutes later but Penman was denied by a great save from the Moorhen keeper.

Moorhen found themselves a way back into the game via the penalty spot as half time approached. A free kick was sent into the box and Moore grabbed the shirt of the attacking player which was spotted by the ref.

The Moorhen striker stepped up to take the penalty but sent his shot wide of the post and Cardea led 1-0 at half time.

Cardea doubled their lead 8 minutes into the second half. Williams sent the ball into the edge of the area, Penman crossed in from the byline and Broughton slid in for a goal on his comeback to the team.

Moorhen pulled a goal back around the hour mark as the ball was sent in from the left and headed in by the striker.

Cardea made some subs as Gav Earl, Ryan Moore and John Reddell came into the action.

It didn't take long for Reddell to mark his first Cardea league appearance with a goal, and what a goal.

A shot from Penman was blocked and the ball fell to Reddell on the edge of the area and he struck a great volley into the net, it looked a goal as soon as it left his boot.

Gav Sampson in the Cardea goal had to be alert as the game entered it's final ten minutes. The Cardea defence appealed for offside but the Moorhen striker was on and Sampson produced a great sliding tackle to dispossess him.

Cardea scored a forth with 3 minutes to play and it was good hold up play in the area from Reddell to set up Cooke who tapped the ball past the keeper first time to finish the scoring.

There was still time for Sampson to make a superb double save from the Moorhen striker as the game entered stoppage time.

The match finished 4-1 and Cardea remain joint top of the league with AFC Allbright.

After the game joint manager Kev Webster said: "Well done today boys, nice to get a victory against these. The turning point today was the missed penalty, after that we switched on more and played much better.

"Was good to see the whole team contributing to win, Tom and Reddell both coming off the bench after injuries, scored and set up one each. When we have a fully fit side it's going to be a massive boost for our title push.

"Yeoman was quality today, nice to see Shane back on the score sheet and Gav S did what he needed to do very well. Well done boys, big test next week in Parkside."

Joint manager Craig Robinson added: "Another good, solid 3 points. I was disappointed in Moorhen to be honest thought they would be better and force us to play at a higher level.

"We did what we had to do and could have had a couple more goals. Please the lads off the bench contributed, meaning they're pushing for a start next week.

"Man of the match was Yeoman, he kept it simple, kept possession better than anyone else and played some killer through balls. Well done lads."

Next up for Cardea is a league game against Parkside, next Sunday at Bushfield.
