Shane Cooke hit his first hat-trick for Cardea FC to secure a 5-1 win over Diesel Power with Luke Penman and Michael Williams also scoring.

Cardea began the game with a 3-5-2 with Gav Sampson retaining his place between the sticks. The back three consisted of Michael Williams, Dale Moore and Tony Harper. Ryan Moore and Kynan Bereznyckyj played as wing backs.

Captain for the day Aaron Yeoman played in midfield with Gav Earl and Shane Cooke, Luke Penman and Matt Jarvis started up front.

The pitch at Werrington was poor and cut up but the weather was warmer than in previous weeks and didn't affect conditions during the game.

Cardea made a flying start to the game and were two up in five minutes.

The first was scored after just 65 seconds as Cooke picked the ball up on the Cardea left and played a great ball over the defence for Penman to run onto, the forward struck the ball first time into the net from an angle.

The second Cardea goal was another Penman-Cooke combination. Cooke won the ball in midfield, played a one two with Penman, and ran through the Diesel Power defence to score his first of the game.

Following the fast start Cardea took their foot off the gas and Diesel Power had a bit of possession but never looked like troubling the Cardea goal with the centre backs not letting the forwards past. On the attack Cardea were producing some good "gapping" passes through the Diesel Power defence!

Cooke almost scored a second from a Yeoman corner but his header went into the side netting.

Cooke did grab his second goal mid way through the first half. He won a free kick of the left hand side of the box and took it himself. It's a shot that the Diesel keeper will want to forget as it went straight at him and between his legs into the net.

The goalkeeper made up for his error 5 minutes later when Bereznyckyj worked himself into a good shooting position and unleashed a great shot with his weaker foot but the keeper denied him with a flying save.

Cardea were continuing to press for a forth goal and Yeoman hit the bar from a free kick and Williams had a header from a corner scrambled off the line.

After half time Cardea continued to create chances. A ball in from the right was flicked on in the area by Yeoman and Penman turned with the ball and struck the underside of the cross bar and the ball bounced to safety. Daryl Patrick was brought into the action in place of Bereznyckyj.

The forth goal was added after the hour mark and Penman and Cooke combined again. The time it was a neat flick from Penman into the run of Cooke who powered into the box and flicked in his hat-trick with the outside of his boot into the far corner.

At the other end Sampson had to be alert to preserve his clean sheet and produced a great double save to stop Diesel Power getting on the score sheet.

Daniel Robinson came on for Gav Earl half way through the second period. Cardea thought they should have had a penalty just after as Jarvis ran into the area and was clipped a couple of times but the referee didn't give the spot kick.

Cardea scored a fifth with fifteen minutes to go. Diesel Power half cleared a corner and Penman drilled the ball back in from the edge of the area, it was flicked on by Jarvis and finished by Williams with the help of a deflection. Jarvis made way for Michael Creek after the goal.

As the game entered it's latter stages Robinson and Creek both had opportunities to increase the lead but couldn't finish their chances.

In stoppage time Diesel Power grabbed a late consolation and it was a goal for ex Cardea Reserve player Liam Buchan. He ran onto a ball through and produced a good dink over keeper Sampson.

The referee brought the contest to a finish and it was a result which saw Cardea join Premiair at the top of the league, second only on goal difference with a game in hand.

The man of the match was awarded to Cooke who played well throughout the game and took his goals well. His heatmap saw him cover most of the pitch!!!

Unfortunately Cardea's newly appointed press officer didn't turn up for the game and as such the manager's interviews are quite short this week. Craig Robinson said: "The game was over after 4 minutes. We never looked like losing, 5 wins away from the title! My MOTM was Cookie can't not give it him after a hatty!"

Kev Webster added: "We showed the right attitude and need to carry that on if we want to win the league. Was an easy game we never really got out of second gear. Still need to stay focused and not slip up against these type of teams. Man of the match was Shane. Willy was a close second but allowed Liam Buchan to score!!"

Cardea FC take on Fenland Police next week with the Reserves also back in action with a game against top of the league Parkside Reserves.
