Cardea FC beat AFC Bretton 5-0 to move top of the league with Luke Penman (2), Aaron Yeoman, Tom Rimes and Daryl Patrick scoring the goals.

Gavin Sampson made his return to the Cardea goal after missing the previous three weeks. Michael Williams, Tom Rimes and Stuart Yaxley played as the three centre backs with Dale Moore and Kynan Bereznyckyj as wing backs.

The midfield three were Daryl Patrick, Shane Cooke and Aaron Yeoman with Luke Penman and Adam Simons up front.

Cardea made a bit of a shaky start to the game but soon found their feet and were one up in five minutes. Shane Cooke won the ball on the right and played it forward and Penman lobbed to keeper for his forth of the season.

After 10 minutes Cardea were awarded a penalty and Bretton could have been down to 10 men. A long throw from Dale Moore was flicked on and the Bretton defender punched the ball away to concede the penalty. No further action was taken against the defender but Yeoman stepped up and tucked away the penalty.

Cardea were rampant and creating chances every time they got in the Bretton half but Cooke, Penman and Patrick were all guilty of missing chances.

Cardea added their third midway through the first half. A Simons corner was picked up at the back post by Cooke who crossed in for Rimes to power home a header.

Cardea could have added three or four more before half time but poor finishing cost them. On one occasion Dale Moore sprinted down the right and crossed for Yeoman but he skied his effort high over the bar from six yards.

The early stages of the second half saw Cardea score their forth, a great through ball from Patrick was finished well by Penman.

The rest of the second half was lacklustre by Cardea as they struggled to play the simple football they were playing in the first half. Chances were still being regularly created but the finishing touch couldn't be applied.

On the hour mark Phil Brown and Daniel Robinson were introduced to bring some fresh legs into the game.

A fifth Cardea goal was scored just before the end. The keeper saved a shot from Penman but the rebound went straight to Patrick and he calmly slotted home.

The game ended 5-0 and for Cardea, although it was a great result, they will be reflecting on a performance where they could have easily doubled their goal tally.

Manager Kev Webster said: "Today we scored 5 and had chances to score more. We came off the pitch like it was a defeat. It wasn't anywhere near our standard of football and was not as good to watch as previous weeks. This was an ugly win and that's something we didn't do last season was win these games comfortably and not play at our best.

"Today was a bad day at the office in terms of the football we played, we know we can play better and have played better but 5 goals and clean sheet is the positive. 3 points was the aim and that's what we got so well done for that. I would like to mention the back 3 yet again who were outstanding, they controlled the game, kept us in possession, broke the few attacks up they had and really kept the team organised. Well done Tom in scoring today but I think Yax was quality today so he just nicked man of the match from the other two centre backs. I'm really happy with the way you 3 work as a unit, keep that up boys it was another well deserved clean sheet."

Cardea are in Hunts Cup action next week when they travel to Huntingdon to play Lord Protector.
