Cardea FC made the semi finals of the Hunts Cup for the first time in their history thanks to a 5-4 penalty win over Catworth.

Cardea reverted back to their title winning 3-5-2 formation: Sampson; Yaxley, D Moore, Kiernan, Bereznyckyj, Goymour; Cooke, Simons Yeoman; Ames, Penman. Bench: Broughton, Earl, Migneco, R Moore.

The game started at a frantic pace with Cardea doing the majority of the defending without being opened up by Catworth. Ryan Moore came on after 25 minutes to replace the injured Goymour.

The game was very even in the opening 35 minutes, then Catworth took over for the next 8 minutes, scoring from close range after good work out wide, Cardea allowed the ball to come across the box and the Catworth striker tapped home.

Catworth doubled their lead within 4 minutes, a poorly defended quick free kick gave the Catworth midfielder too much space on edge of the box and he drove home number two.

Cardea's heads didn't drop and a minute before half time Cardea halved the deficit when a quick throw in by Ryan Moore bounced to the far post, Penman adjusted his body to fire the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-1 to Catworth at half time.

Cardea manager Craig Robinson identified a few areas which needed work, giving certain players jobs to do at half time and what an impact it had.

The second half started with Cardea dominating possession, winning the 50/50's and they got their reward after 56 minutes.

Cooke won possession in his own half and drove forward leaving the Catworth midfield scrambling back, he played the pass of the game to Penman who drove the ball past the keeper into the far corner to make it 2-2.

Cardea continued to dominate areas and the back 3 kept possession well and shut all Catworth attacks out. Cooke, Yeoman and Simons continued to dominate the midfield areas. Earl replaced Bereznyckyj on 74 minutes.

Cooke had a chance from an Ames corner but headed over on 77 and Penman was denied in the 88th minute by Catworth's keeper. The game finished 2-2 and went to penalties.

The Cardea manager chose the takers and the order which they are to be taken and the 5 nominated players stepped up.

Catworth scored their first penalty low under Sampson who was unlucky not to save it.

Penman stepped up and calmly slotted home 1-1.

Catworth scored, 2-1.

Yeoman confidently stepped up and made it 2-2 with the best penalty of the day.

Catworth scored 3-2.

Cooke stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way 3-3.

Catworth converted 4-3.

Simons stepped up and smashed it onto the underside of the bar and in 4-4.

Catworth's 5th was a superb save from Sampson diving low to his right.

Rob Ames stepped up to win it. Bottom corner 5-4.

Cardea won 5-4 on Pens.

After the game manager Craig Robinson said: "I was undecided on the formation right up until last night and credit to Dale Moore he made a case for the 3 at the back. We only switched off for a 10 minute period which we were punished for but we didn't let our heads drop and we took the fight to Catworth.

"We were the better side after going 2-0 down and that's due to the hard work every player put in today and we began to trust each other with the ball.

"Penman took his goals very well and looked a totally different player in the second half. Credit to Rob he ran his socks off and did the job asked of him in the second half. The back 3 were solid in particular Dale. The wing backs were up and down all game. Midfield three ran the game.

"Man of the match goes to Shane Cooke, they couldn't contain him, tried to foul him and that didn't work either. The best I've seen him play. Congratulations boys! Fully deserved."

Cardea have a week off next week with the Reserves taking centre stage in their Hunts Cup semi final at Bushfield.
