Baston FC scored a late goal to secure a 4-3 win and knock Cardea FC out of the PFA Senior Cup.

Marc Tirant started his first Cardea game in goal behind a back four of Dale Moore, Michael Williams, Stuart Yaxley and Ryan Moore.

Playing a 4-3-3 formation the midfield three were Aaron Yeoman, Shane Cooke and Adam Simons. The attacking trio were Antonio Migneco, Luke Penman and Matt Sinclair, who was also making his Cardea debut.

Due to several players missing last season's captain Daryl Patrick came out of retirement to help the team out off the bench.

Cardea went into the game as Division 2 leaders, while Division 1 side Baston enjoyed a 4-0 victory over Ploughman last Sunday.

The opening 15 minutes of the game saw the three Cardea forwards cause the Baston defence problems with their direct running and Yeoman had a couple of shots from the edge of the area which were closer to the corner flag than the goal.

It was Baston who scored the opener from a corner kick. Poor marking on the set piece saw the Baston attacker win the header and the ball deflected in off Williams.

Cardea responded well to going behind. With 20 minutes played Penman found Migneco in the area and his shot was superbly stopped by the keeper but Migneco was fastest to the rebound and took his time before slotting home past the keeper and a defender.

Cardea's poor marking came back to haunt them as half time approached. This time Baston won two free headers from a corner and took the lead for the second time.

Fifteen minutes into the second half and Cardea were level again. Penman was clipped in the area and the referee awarded a penalty. Yeoman stepped up to take it and scored, despite the keeper diving the right way.

The sides were level for 10 minutes before Baston regained their lead. A well worked move set the Baston striker through one on one with the keeper and he took the goal well.

Just after the goal Cardea sent on Patrick for the injured Yeoman as the away team searched for another equaliser. And it arrived with 10 minutes to play.

Penman worked his way into the box on the right side and squared it for Patrick to score on his return to the team.

Both sides searched for the winner as Baston had a succession of corners and Penman saw a shot go wide from the edge of the area but it was Baston who grabbed the winner with 3 minutes to go.

Keeper Tirant did well to keep out an effort with his feet but the loose ball looped up in the area and the Baston striker produced a superb bicycle kick into the top corner, a goal which deserved to win any game.

Cardea couldn't find a forth equaliser and the game finished 4-3 to the Division 1 side.

After the game joint manager Kev Webster said: "We went into today's cup tie with the squad down to its bare bones. We played a Baston team who are in form, we battled like we have since we started in the morning league and for a good part of the game matched them and played some really good football.

"I was proud of how we all reacted to going behind. We worked the ball and pressed really well as team. The defence was solid and did their best to limit the attacks they had, midfield and attack worked hard as a unit and should have got more from this game. Penalties was a fair way to end this cup game. We play like today every week and we will have a real chance of winning things again this season. Proud of all of you and unlucky boys. I can't pick a man of the match because you all played really well. I'm as gutted as you are."

Joint manager Craig Robinson added: "Very unlucky to lose today, deserved to take it to pens at the very least! Set piece marking let us down and that was the only difference between the 2 teams. Disappointing but lots of good things to take.

"My MOTM was Antonio, always a threat when going forward, took his goal well and got stuck into tackles."

It's back to league action next week for Cardea as they take on Parkside at Bushfield.
