Cardea FC beat ICA Columbo 3-1 to reach the quarter finals of the Hunts Cup.

Cardea FC (4-3-3): Gav Sampson; Anthony Kiernan, Stuart Yaxley (c), Michael Williams, Kynan Bereznyckyj; Shane Cooke, Adam Simons, Aaron Yeoman; Alex Goymour, Rob Ames, Luke Penman. Subs: Gavin Earl, Antonio Migneco, Dale Moore

Cardea dominated the first half but couldn't take advantage of the chances they created.

The first decent chance came within 10 minutes when the keeper punched away an effort from Penman. The busy keeper was called into action again midway through the half to parry a Goymour header round the post, from the following corner the ball was cleared off the line.

After half time the chances continued to come, this time Ames was found with a defence splitting pass but couldn't find a way past the keeper as he produced a brilliant double save.

It took a bit of inspirational play to break the deadlock and it was Adam Simons who produced it. Yeoman chipped a ball into the box and Simons met it on the volley with a flying scissor kick. The keeper got a hand to it but the shot was too powerful to keep out and gave Simons his first goal of the season.

Gav Earl, Antonio Migneco and Dale Moore came on to try to settle the game in Cardea's favour.

But it was Shane Cooke who produced another moment of magic to get the second. The Cardea number 9 picked up a loose ball on halfway, avoided a head high boot, took the ball past 5 players, rounded the goal keeper and tapped into the empty net. The second contender for goal of the season in this game.

The ICA keeper thwarted Ames again with ten minutes to go with another double save, but the striker got his goal minutes later. Gav Earl strode down the right wing and produced a great cross into the area, the control from Ames was instant and he put his shot through the keeper's legs.

At the other end the Cardea defence had all played superb and had controlled the ICA strikers well throughout the game. However, they were unlucky to concede a consolation in added time when the ICA striker shot from an angle which beat keeper Sampson and Simons couldn't clear it off the line.

The goal didn't mean anything in the end as the final whistle was blown soon after and Cardea FC joined Cardea Reserves in the quarters finals of the Hunts Cup.

After the game joint manager Kev Webster said: "The first half we looked sloppy but had some good spells. Having breaks every other week is not helping us with momentum. Second half we were much better and played closer to what we are capable of.

"Still need to pass the ball better in the final third and take our chances but a win is good and the next round awaits. The whole team played well really well, the back line was solid and Simons deserved his man of the match even though he did score an own goal!!"

Craig Robinson added: "We dominated the game without creating many clear cut chances in the first half. Second half our pressure told and we started to open them up more regularly. We should have had more goals and I was disappointed we didn't keep the clean sheet as the back 4 and keeper deserved it!

"Simons was very good in the holding midfield role and took his goal very well and deserves MOTM. On to the next round, we need to be more clinical in front of goal in future games."

Cardea FC have a week off next week as all attention turns to Cardea Reserves who entertain Moorhen Reserves at Bushfield.
