Shane Cooke hit a hat-trick and grabbed five assists as Cardea beat The Railway AFC 10-2 on the Bushfield 3G.

Cardea FC were the first opponents for the newly formed Railway AFC and the experience told as Cardea hit double figures for the first time in their history.

The game took place in warm conditions at Bushfield and the teams decided to play 3 periods of 30 minutes to help with the heat.

Gavin Sampson made his first Cardea appearance for a year between the sticks with Michael Williams and Tom Rimes playing centre back. Tom Broughton led the line up front with support from Daniel Robinson and Shane Cooke on the wings.

Cardea made a fast start to the game and were two up in 5 minutes. Firstly Daryl Patrick picked out Cooke in the box and he opened the scoring, Cooke then turned provider for Robinson who took advantage of a defensive slip to double the lead.

Cardea added a third after 20 minutes as Patrick and Aaron Yeoman combined and Yeoman slotted past the keeper from 15 yards.

Just before the 40th minute a great ball from Yeoman found Cooke on the left and as he surged inside the area Patrick nicked the ball from him and scored.

Robinson returned the favour to Cooke as his ball into the box was finished neatly by Cooke for Cardea's fifth.

Halfway through the middle 30 The Railway won a penalty following a push in the area by Lewis Payne. The Railway player stepped up and scored from the spot to make it 5-1.

Into the final 30 minutes Tony Harper strolled out of defence and hit a great cross field ball to Adam Simons who controlled and slammed the ball into the top corner. There was a hint of offside about the goal but the ref gave it.

The 7th was scored following a good spell of passing and Yeoman and Cooke exchanged 1 2's with Yeoman finding the back of the net.

The Railway were awarded another penalty in the 77th minute after another push. The penalty struck the underside of the bar and just crossed the line.

It was soon 8-2 after, another good run from Cooke into the area and he unselfishly passed to Simons who grabbed his second of the game.

The ninth came along 3 minutes later and it was another penalty in the game. Cooke was fouled and Lewis Payne took responsibility and sent the keeper the wrong way to get his first goal in his second stint at the club.

The tenth was scored with 5 minutes to go. Simons lobbed a long ball forward, it was missed by the defender and Cooke stole in to complete his hat-trick.

Referee Paul Osbourne brought the game to a finish with the final whistle and it was a great performance from Cardea which will give them hope for another good season in 2014/15.

After the game the managers had their say. Craig Robinson said: "Faultless from the start, the 3 30 minutes gave me a chance to look at different player combinations.

"If we get everyone that was there today signed up we will have a very successful season next year. Yeoman in the first 30 tore them to pieces having that free roll off the striker, Cookies pace and direct approach gives us a whole new dimension.

"Simons came off the bench and contributed the most he has in a long while, it's finailly nice to have have 16-18 man squad where every player could easily be a starter.

"Hard to pick a overall man of the match as everyone played well today, Shane just nicks it for his hatty. We don't only play good football but we have decent banter too!"

Kev Webster added: "Despite the difference in class which was shown from the very first whistle we can take some positives out of today's game. The way the ball was moved around, all players linking up well and movement was excellent.

"We need to apply today against some harder teams and I will be doing my best to get the tougher games so we are ready for the step up next season. All formations worked well today so credit goes to Robbo on that.

"There was a few stand out players for me today, was good to see the captain back to his old habits even though he stole a goal from someone else's hard work. For me Shane was man of the match, It's hard to fault this lad, work rate effort, ability and looked to team mates rather then be a greedy player.

"Shock of the day comes from Lewis scoring a penalty and it's even caught on camera. Well done today lads, be a bigger test next game but enjoy the summer break."

The first team now take a break for a month with the reserves playing The Railway AFC on the 22nd June. Training will start on Wednesday 11th June at Lawson Avenue from 7pm.
