Cardea FC beat AFC Peterborough 2-1 in a friendly match played on the Bushfield 3G.

Cardea handed debuts to 3 players as Shane Cooke, Jamie Rimes and Gary Wigmore played for the Division 3 champions.

The game started well for Cardea as last season's top goalscorer Tom Broughton grabbed his first of pre season. A great cross from Daniel Robinson picked out the striker and Broughton smashed the ball home from close range.

Broughton could have doubled the Cardea advantage on 10 minutes but his shot was saved well by the AFC goalkeeper.

AFC drew level half way through the first half when a cross was half cleared by an Anton Fountain punch, however Glenn Markland was first to the loose ball and drilled the ball home.

Cardea had chances to retake the lead in the early stages of the second half when Tom Rimes had a chance from a corner but following a massive goalmouth scramble the keeper managed to grab the ball.

Robinson and Broughton both had further chances to score with Robinson testing the keeper and Broughton nearly producing a great lob but the attempt went over. There was also a big penalty appeal as Gav Earl was fouled in the area but referee Paul Osbourne said no foul.

Shane Cooke, who was outstanding all game, grabbed the winner just before the 80th minute. The debutant picked up the ball on the half way line and ran through the AFC midfield and defence and shot past the goalkeeper.

Broughton could have added a third late on after good work from Jamie Rimes but his shot hit the post and went wide.

Ozzie brought an end to the match and while it was a win for Cardea the performances of the players were more important than the result.

After the game manager Kev Webster said: "Thanks to everyone for coming down especially the new lads. Was a good blend of new and old. The positives are there as we are looking to build a reserve team and improve the firsts all players involved looked good.

"From the new crop Shane and Gav looked quality and both contenders for man of the match. At 3-5-2 we allowed them too much time and space at the back but created good chances going forward. As soon as we went back to 4-4-2 it helped us control the game better and at times looked like the case of when would we score that 2nd not if.

"Great effort and has left me and Robbo some food for thought. Div 2 is a bigger step then some will give credit for so we have to be ready for that and push for back to back promotions."

Manager Craig Robinson was more philosophical with his comments: "Another game and another win! This management malarkey is a piece of piss! Night night."
