Cardea FC took advantage of an AFC Bretton team who struggled for a team with Mike Dandrilli and Tom Greetham grabbing a hat trick each.

The game started at just after 10.30 in humid conditions at the Bushfield 3G. AFC could only field 9 players after their assistant manager quit the team and took half of their players to rivals Bretton North End last week.

With a two man advantage Cardea were passing the ball well and were in control of the game, the strike force of Dandrilli and Tom Greetham both had chances to opening the scoring before the first goal arrived.

A big kick by keeper Anton Fountain was headed on by Greetham to Dandrilli, who in turn headed it back to Greetham who found himself one on one with the keeper and managed to get the ball in the back of the net.

Goals two and three came in quick succession 20 minutes in when good work from Adam Simons on the left resulted in a good pass to Greetham who cut the ball inside for Dandrilli to finish. The third came just minutes later when another long kick from Fountain bounced through to Greetham who drilled the ball home on the half volley.

Goal number four came when captain Daryl Patrick passed it to Daniel Robinson on the right, Robinson crossed and Dandrilli grabbed his second of the game. Dandrilli was involved in the fifth 4 minutes later when he worked a short corner and crossed in for Tom Rimes to power a header past the goalkeeper at the back post.

On the half hour a good 18 yard shot from Robinson was tipped over the bar by the Bretton keeper and from the resulting corner Dandrilli got his hat trick after managing to skip between defenders and run down the byline and score at the second attempt after his first shot was saved.

Bretton had another player show up to boost their line-up to 10 and it seemed to inject a bit of life into the Bretton attack as Fountain had to make a couple of decent saves towards the end of the half. Rimes also made a good last ditch challenge after he gave the ball away.

Just before half time Daryl Patrick showed everyone what a heavy Saturday drinking session and 4 hours sleep results in when his attempt at a volley resulted in an ungainly hoof over the bar and a ribbing from his team mates.

At half time the two managers got together and agreed that Ryan Moore and Phil Brown would play the second half for Bretton to even up the numbers.

The second half got off to a slow start with Cardea players obviously drained following their late Saturday nights but Patrick almost made up for his volley attempt with a long range drive that only just went over the bar. Just after the hour Adam Simons crossed the ball to Tom Greetham who controlled and slotted past the keeper to secure his hat trick.

The next 20 minutes was a bit chaotic as Dale Moore took it upon himself to play right wing directly against his brother and he repeatedly skipped past his tired brother like he wasn't there, including a nutmeg. Ryan still had enough left in him though to power forward and outpace Patrick after he turned on the afterburners!!

Goalkeeper Fountain used his feet to good effect to keep out a couple of Bretton shots and Tony Harper's reading of the game was good to keep the Bretton striker's football ability quiet, unfortunately he couldn't do the same with his mouth!!

The scoring was completed towards the end when George Greetham passed to Kynan Bereznyckjy who drilled it into the top of the net past the keeper.

After the game manager Kev Webster said: "We passed the ball well, we used the man advantage to good effect and we looked good in possession. I'd like to apologise for the 20 minutes where I lost the plot and didn't know what was going on!"

Cardea will look to continue their unbeaten pre season when they face Walnut Tree next Sunday at Bushfield with a 10.30 kick off. Training will be on Wednesday at Bushfield at 7.30 and all squad members are expected to attend.
