A good battling display from the girls

Before the game started Cardea were introduced to their new manager! 3 year old Mae takes over from the start of next season and wanted to check out her new team!

Cardea went into this game against Wisbech Town having conceded 8 or more goals in every fixture against the title chasing team.

Cardea started brightly and looked to take the game to the opposition to force them onto the back foot. Cardea managed to forge some decent chances with both Phoebe Browness and Laura Rudd coming close to opening the scoring.

Unfortunately for Cardea it was Wisbech Town that broke the deadlock on the 27th minute. A pass played into the left channel caught the defensive line out, leaving Wisbech with a simple pass across the box for the striker to slot home.

It was soon 2-0 and the second goal was similar to the first. A through ball cut open Cardea's defensive line and saw the Wisbech striker free to run though and slot the ball past Carlie Rudd in goal.

A now rampant Wisbech Town were playing with freedom and looking much more comfortable causing the management of Cardea to react and change the shape to a more defensive 352.

The change couldn’t help stop Wisbech Towns third which saw the striker swap the ball for a rocket! Carlie Rudd in goal got her hands to the powerful strike but it looked more likely to force her into the goal rather than bounce out!

Half time saw a few changes for Cardea as Naomi Hall replaced Rach Cleaver and Jessica 'O Sullivan came on for Megan Purnell.

Daniel Gibbs also replaced Kev Webster on the line, the Cardea secretary decided that nothing was going to stop him from watching his beloved Liverpool play against Chelsea. This upset Gibbs who, being a Chelsea fan, also wanted to watch the fixture but was probably grateful he didn’t in the end. (Chelsea putting in another embarrassment of a performance which has started to become the norm).

The 2nd half started positively for Cardea who had regrouped and regained their momentum going forward as they looked for a way back into the game!

Substitute Jess O’Sullivan managed to score a superb goal in the 55th minute when a well timed through ball from Phoebe Browness saw Jess run through, cut in on to her right and finish into the top corner leaving the Wisbech keeper no chance!

The game became a battle as Wisbech tried to stop Cardea from playing any football at all by sending them 15ft into the air at every opportunity. Cardea didn't give up and dug in to show the grit and determination that they have developed as a team this year. Unfortunately, towards the end, a couple of lapses in concentration allowed Wisbech in and both resulted in goals to make the score 5-1 at full time.

After the game, Manager Daniel Gibbs said “I'm pleased with the effort shown by the team today, they dug in when they needed to and showed some real character out there.

Player of the match was awarded to Captain Laura Rudd who led by example and won her battles both in attack and midfield. Well done!”

Incoming manager Mae added “Nanny play football” which actually made more sense than anything that the other coaches Matthew Robinson, Kev Webster or Charly Gunn could have added.

Next up for Cardea is a home game against Hungate Rovers. A fixture against opposition who always give the ladies a close game.
