Debutant gets winner in 7 goal thriller!

Cardea Ladies won 3-4 away at Hungate and made it 2 wins from 2 with goals from 4 different scorers!

After winning 3-2 last game, Cardea hoped to end a series of draws against Hungate and cement their place in third.

Hungate kicked off but it was Cardea who had the first of the chances in the game, Captain and Top scorer Laura Rudd putting her effort wide within the first few minutes of the game. Hungate responded with a chance of their own before Rudd made no mistake with her second sight of goal. The attacker finishing superbly after being played through 1 on 1 by Striker Jess O’Sullivan. 0-1.

It didn’t take long for Hungate to respond and make it 1-1. As Cardea tried to play out from the back they were met by the high press and Hungate won the ball back. Their striker managing to take full advantage to finish well. 1-1.

The majority of the remainder of the first half was even with Phoebe Browness, Jess O’Sullivan and Naomi Hall all seeing shots saved whilst at the other end, only the crossbar could stop the Hungate winger from giving her team the lead after a fine strike.

Cardea did manage to add their second of the game on the stroke of half time. The ball fell to Laura Rudd on the edge of the area who picked her head up and returned the favour for the earlier assist by playing in Jess O’Sullivan to superbly poke the ball past the onrushing keeper and in to the bottom corner. 1-2.

Hungate could count themselves unlucky to concede. In the build up, one of their players picked up an injury that went unnoticed by the referee, allowing Cardea to take advantage.

The goal ended up being the last of the play for the first half. Half time Hungate 1-2 Cardea.

At the interval, manager Daniel Gibbs made 2 substitutions with Naomi Hall being replaced by Danni King and Steph Wagstaff being replaced by debutant Courtney Coles.

It only took 1 minute of the second half for Coles to make an impact, she was played through on goal and just as she attempted to get her shot off, she was fouled. From the resulting free kick, Nicola Anderson managed to beat the wall and deceive the keeper to find the far corner of the goal superbly. 1-3.

7 minutes later, Hungate managed to pull a goal back. After some good wide play, the threatening Hungate winger found herself on the right hand side of the box and was able to squeeze a cross past the Cardea defenders and keeper to find her grateful teammate who was left with a simple tap in from 3 yards.

The game was certainly one for the strikers and when Coles got the ball on the edge of the area for the second time, nothing was going to stop her from getting her shot off. Her powerful shot flew over the Hungate keeper and into the far right hand side of the goal. Courtney barely had time to turn around before she was jumped on by her team mates who wanted to congratulate her on her debut goal.

With the heat certainly now affecting the players, the fast pace to the second half began to slow and the tempo dropped. As space opened up, it was the Hungate players who began to take control and they set up a nervy end to the game when they scored their third of the game in the 77th minute.

Despite the nervous end, Cardea did manage to hold on and win the game 3-4. All 4 of the Cardea goals coming from different scorers.

WOTM was awarded to striker Jess O’Sullivan whose assist and goal in the first half set the team on their way!

Next up for Cardea Ladies is a home game against Wisbech Town and Cardea will certainly be hoping for a better performance than the last time the teams met!
