Cardea Ladies hit by injuries in the defeat to Ketton

Ketton 5 - 1 Cardea

Cardea traveled to league leaders Ketton looking for a better performance than when the 2 teams met 2 weeks earlier.

Manager Daniel Gibbs sent the team out having asked for a high work rate and lots of energy and was rewarded when after only 30 seconds Ketton took a 1-0 lead. This seemed to be the wake up call Cardea Ladies needed though as they finally realized that the game had started.

Ketton were making the better of the chances from the 2 teams but Cardea were more than holding their own and creating chances to score with some good link up play between the midfield and front 3. Cardea were forced into an early change with Courtney Coles having to come off injured and Gina Stevenson taking her place in that front 3. Ketton managed to settle their own nerves though in the 37th minute, when a through ball to their striker was calmly slotted home to make it 2-0.

Ketton started the 2nd half brightly, having a couple of goals disallowed early on as Cardea struggled to get going but slowly started to work their way back into the game, with some good play down both flanks helping, then Cardea's luck ran out.

First, Steph Wagstaff had to be replaced after suffering a knock to her knee, this saw Courtney Coles return to the action up front as Cardea shifted the team around. Tessa Morrison then had to be replaced, with the young lady rolling her ankle and unable to continue, Tessa had to be carried off as she was clearly in pain and Sarah Jane Perry entered the match up top with players having to change positions again. Ketton took full advantage of the disruption to Cardea and took a quick 4-0 lead.

With spectators having to sort out cars to help Tessa go to hospital, and at the next stop in play, players from both teams applauded Tessa on her way. With Cardea 4-0 down, Daniel Gibbs brought off a clearly hurt Courtney Coles for Steph Wagstaff, who had decided she'd had a long enough break to go back on, and a debut was given to Shannon Barley, with Naomi Hall given a rest. Ketton hadn't quite finished the scoring though as they added a 5th to their total.

Cardea then got a goal that was well deserved, given the situations that they had through! Skipper Laura Rudd deciding she wanted one last run at the Ketton back line. Laura collected the ball in midfield and with a few twist and turns, worked her way in to the box and scored from a tight angle. Clearly the skipper learned something from her one week loan spell with Thrapston Town Ladies.

WOTM went to Megan Purnell for an excellent performance in central midfield.

Manager Daniel Gibbs said after the game 'I challenged the team at the start of the game to be better than we were last time we played Ketton, I was looking for a high work rate, lots of energy and to see if we could cause Ketton any problems, this we did, unfortunately a certain amount of events went against us today but the ladies gave me exactly what I asked for and I'm happy with that.

Next up for the ladies is an away trip to Wisbech Town.
